Legal Question in Business Law in New Jersey
Employment law
I live in NJ. I was hired as a receptionist. I have now been informed that I ''must'' attend a 911 dispatcher training class. The class will be held at the office. But it is over a week long and adds 45 hours to my week on top of my regular 40. We are also not getting paid for this. When I told them that this is not what I was hired for and I did not wish to do dispatch. I was told that they would have to rethink my employment with them. I told them to my knowledge that they could not make unpaid training mandatory. She told me ''Oh yes I can because I told you that I hired you as a receptionist/ dispatcher. Ask anyone else.... so on'' This is an out right lie. I was hired as only a receptionist. And I did ask the others and they were only hired as receptionists. Can they make unpaid training mandatory ? Also, the class is run during 2nd shift and the 2nd shift employees have been told they have to clock out during the class, Can they make them do this?

Re: Employment law
As a receptionist or dispatcher you are likely to be classified by the State as a non-exempt employee. As such, your employer must pay overtime for hours worked beyond 40 hours per week.
