Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Collection Fraud

In February of 2003, I found that a collection item for $128 had been placed on my credit report. After having to make several calls to the financial company, I finally s/w a rep who informed me that the collection was for my husband, and the correct amount was for $226.80. In my haste in attempting to clear up this matter in order to carry on with a mortgage proceeding, I gave them a check over the phone and was to receive a letter of release regarding this matter. It is now MAY and I have yet to receive this letter, and in fact, the item is STILL on my credit report. I have attempted to locate the company of whom they are collecting for in order to get any information regarding this situation. There are NO listing ANYWHERE for this company. #1, If my husband incurred this bill, why is it appearing on my credit report, #2- Why can't I verify this company in order to verify the services that were supposidly rendered? #3 What did I already send them $226.80 for?? The financial company cannot even verify this?? Someone is not telling the truth. What can be done in order for me to get this matter straightened out already?
