Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

My 18-yeear old granddaughter took two cell phones from the high school lockers of two students she did not know. The phones were recovered from her car by the police. She was suspended from school for three days, but has since returned. The charges were reduced to a "misdemeanor". She is to appear in court tomorrow. She cannot afford an attorney. Can you tell me what we might expect in court tomorrow. Will I be allowed to stand with her when she is called before the Judge? Am I correct that the court will appoint an attorney to defend her? Can the "record" of this event be "expunged"? Thank you for your assistance.

Getting a lawyer for this case won't cost much, so how can you say that she can't afford it? How do you know? The Court just doesn't hand you a lawyer, you have to apply and the cost is often half of what a real lawyer would cost. If she is found guilty, she would have to wait 5 years to get the record expunged but that may cost 5 times what a real lawyer would cost. Call me anytime at 732/773/2768 to discuss.
