Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Shoplifting Charges of minor

My daughter is 15 years old and was arrested for shoplifting two months ago. She stole a $15 bag from a department store. She's never been in trouble with the law before and is in high school. We have to appear in court next week and I need advise on what to do.

Do I need an attorney to represnt her? If not, what's the best defense in a case like this. I'm worried this may appear in her record and also about what kind of sentence she may receive.

Please help!!!!

Thank you

Re: Shoplifting Charges of minor

Your daughter has been charged with a crime. She may have some serious consequences. More importantly, she is making bad, criminal choices and she has to stop now. The lawyering part: if you are in northern NJ, I do NOT do this law (criminal defense, juvenile offenses) but have several friends who are expert. As to the very bad choices she is making, you absolutely need to get her to a counsellor, maybe a licensed clinical social worker. She is headed toward big problems. It is not a joke. It is not a one time impulse. If she will not go, then YOU need to go talk to a mental health professional to find out what YOU can do to help your teenager.

Good luck. Let me know if you want that referral.

Your daughter, as you are aware, has been charged as a juvenile. The matter will be heard by a Family Division judge rather than a criminal division judge. However, juvenile matters can have a long-lasting effect on a young person and have later repurcussions. You should consult with an attorney to determine the best course of action. There's not enough information in your message to be able to give any further advice. Good luck!
