Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey
I'm a permanent resident and I voted a few times locally and general. I recently went to become a citizen and I was asked if I voted and I said yes....I did not know it was illegal...I always receive mail advising me that I can go vote and where I am registered. I have to go back to INS in a month...they want me to bring a letter from the voting office stating that I am no longer on there list. I never registered...I think it might have been through motor vehicles when I first got my license...
My question is how much trouble am I in? Can I be deported? I have been in this country for 30 years...Do I need to take an attorney with me when I go back to INS?
If you can just answer my questions just so I have a little bit of peace of mind...it would be deeply appreciated.
I look forward to your response.
thank you
