Im a musician and if i record someone elses song and distribute as a digital file online without charging money for the song/file is that in violation of any law?

Yes, you are violating the copyright of the songwriter. You need to obtain a compulsory license and pay the applicable royalties if you record the song. The fact that you don't charge money is irrelevant.
