Is an employer allowed to tell you to not come into work for the rest of the week without proper cause?

Yes. New Jersey is an employment-at-will state. Assuming you do not have an employment contract (either an individual one or through a union), both you and your employer can end the employment relationship at any time, with or without reason or good cause (provided the employer's decision is not as a result of the employee's age, race, gender, religion, etc.). Your employer has the right to operate his/her business as he/she sees fit, which includes adjusting your work schedule according to the needs of the business. You, of course, are free to accept or reject your employer's decisions and if you object, you have the right to quit at any time.
