Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey
I was laid off in august so I started my own business. I contacted some former customers who I knew liked my work. My former employer just sent a letter out to customers saying that I stole his client list and that I have sensitive information such as their garage and alarm codes. This is not true. Do I have a case for libel or defamation of character?

Under those facts, you probably have a cause of action against your former employer. Call me if you would like to discuss it further. I will need to know more facts in order to tell.

Yes, based on the facts you shared, a claim for defamation (as well as interference with prospective economic advantage) appears supportable. I routinely represent people in such matters. Please feel free to contact to explore the matters and to protect and advance your rights. Kindly note and remember that my response is merely a general comment on the law related to your question, and NOT legal advice or opinion. Also, your question and my response does NOT create an attorney-client relationship between us. You cannot rely upon what I have written, because I do not have all of the information that I need to advise you or render an opinion. Even simple facts you have not shared can completely change my answer. For me to give you legal advice or opinion, you would need to hire me to be your lawyer, and then we would need to discuss this in detail and go over the documents.
