Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

I'm being sued in small claims court over a work cell phone bill. The phone was stolen from work, but not initally known to be stollen as I hardly ever used it. They are claiming i was responsible for the phone which was in my possesion. Nothing was ever signed or mentioned in my hiring contract that i was responsible for this AM I?
