Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey
Dishonest Public Defender
I went to court to attempt to face a traffic violation, and I seeked the advice of the Public defender present. He took me to the court house parking lot and offered to represent me for a cash fee. (I declined)
Were his actions illegal, and, if so, what statute did he violate?

Dishonest Public Defender
His actions were illegal. The statute that he violated was the one relating to official misconduct, N.J.S. 2C:30-2. If convicted of that offense, he would likely be sentenced to State prison and disbarred.
