You can go to court on this by yourself and tell the prosecutor what you described here. He may agree to just dismiss the ticket based on this. In my opinion it's worth a shot to try and save yourself from paying the fine. If he doesn't agree, then you can ask the judge to give you a trial so you can tell the judge what happened and see if he will agree to just dismiss the ticket. Make sure you bring the registration care with you to court.

Correction, it's a $186.00 fine. Yes, it's worth fighting. There's a provision in that law-NJSA 39:3-29-that allows for the fine to be suspended, if you bring proof of registration to court. You would only have to pay $30 or so for court costs. This decision is solely at the discretion of the Judge. So, the prosecutor may balk at dismissing the fine, but if you tell him that you would like the chance to convince the judge (a hardship story) that the fine should be dsimissed, you might get lucky.

You should go to court and tell the judge you found the document before the officer left your presence and that that fact cures any temporary failure on your part to find it right away. He may agree with you.
