Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

Foreign driving license

I was a tourist driving in New-Jersy and carried an Israeli license which is also in English. A policeman said that my license is not valid without IDP. He gave me a ticket for driving without a license and impounded my rented car. My country says that my license is valid in 20 countries including USA. What can I do?

Re: Foreign driving license

You can contact the court and plead not guilty, and then go to court with your Israeli license to try and get the ticket dismissed or minimized in some way. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

Re: Foreign driving license

I am familiar with the Israeli driver license. I have represented Israelis in the past in similar situations. An Israeli license IS valid in the US (including NJ) and DOES NOT require an IDL. The IDL is basically a document that assures officials in the country in which you are travelling that you really have a driver's license from your home country. A typical license will require this because most licenses are only written in the language of the issuing country. The Israeli license, which incorporates an English translation, does not require a second document to tell English-speaking officials that it is a valid driver's license. The police officer was simply ignorant of the law.

Unless he had an independent basis for the impound, the town he works for (or the State if it was a State Trooper) may owe you an apology and money to reimburse you for the tow, any storage charges, and your time and trouble.

Do you have your car back? How much did it cost? Where did this happen? Were any other tickets issued? (if I had to guess, I'd say speeding) When are you due in court to deal with the ticket(s)?
