Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

I was pulled over for having a suspended license on 8/15. I was unaware that my license was suspended (for an unpaid parking ticket) because I'd been out of town until 8/12 and did not go through my mail yet (certainly not a good excuse, I know). I genuinely did not know that my license had been suspended (I thought I'd paid the parking ticket, and have a confirmation number in my files, but the town did not have any payment on record), and would not have driven on a suspended license if I had known. It is my first time having my license suspended and I have a clean record other than this, with no points on my license. I've not hired a lawyer. How serious a situation am I looking at, and how can I prepare for my court date?

If you are found guilty of driving while suspended or plead guilty to same there will be a surcharge imposed by the motor vehicle commission of $385.00 per year for three years. Addionally, the court could suspend your driver's license for up to six months and impose a fine

of at least $500. You need to hire an attorney.
