Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

speeding ticket

I received a speeding ticket in New Jersey-first ticket ever-76mph in a 55mph. I would like to appeal this on my court appearance date of 10/25/00. My question is- would it be beneficial for me to hire an attorney to appeal this ticket or could I go appeal myself? What I would like to do is have it reduced from the 4 points that will be on my record (NJ) to 2 points. Can this be done on my own or do I need a legal representative to reduce this? Also, in NJ 4 points on your record and there is an automatic $1,000. surcharge placed on your insurance, which I DON'T need, for at least, I believe, a few years. Thank you & I look forward to my answers.

Re: speeding ticket

Getting an attorney NEVER hurts, however, I think it is likely that you can get the 4 point ticket knocked down to 2 points without getting an attorney.

I will assume you were respectful to the cop who stopped you, remember, you can NEVER win an arguement with a cop, the best you can do is break even...

I sugest the following, go to court, speak with the prosecutor, and ask him if he would be able to drop the ticket to 2 points. Tell him if not, you want time to retain an attorney. Prosecutors are busy, and generally, they do not want to have to deal with you again another day, and this will be incentive to agree to your request. If not, it will be worth it to go back with an attorney, but NO attorney can guarantee you an outcome.

Good luck to you.
