For example: Is there a Will? Is property titled in joint names or in a trust with the girlfriend named as beneficiary?

Same reply as Jon - more information is needed. Unless his property was not registered in joint names (no probate required), your chances are probably slim. If there was a Will or just an administration (no Will), you must act quickly to contest it, if there is legitimacy to the contest. As stated above, more information is required for an answer.
