Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Mexico

marijuana posession

I have been served with a summons to appear in court in Deming, New Mexico for posession of less than one ounce of marijuana. I was passing through on a visit with family in Texas. I live in California, and will not be able to make the court date. Can I get an attorney to appear on my behalf? If I do not resolve the matter and they issue a warrant, will it affect me here in California? I want to resolve this issue, but I am unsure how I can do it.

Re: marijuana posession

The crime is a misdemeanor. The State will not extradite for a misdemeanor. All matters can be handled through an attorney in writing. You need not personally appear. You may locate a Deming NM attorney at http://www.nmbar.org/findattorney/attorneyfinder.aspx

Post for New Mexico attorneys to answer. You'll have to hire one, or return yourself to court. Warrants are forever, and yes you'll be 'affected' by being arrested someday if stopped by police or other security agents.
