Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Hi. I found out my landlord increased my rent too much when I renewed my lease. It's a rent controlled apartment in NYC and they raised it more then the allowed percentage (for that time period). Does this invalidate the lease as a legal contract, since the amount of the increase was unlawful and did not follow rent stabilized rules. I just want to know if this would make the lease a non-binding contract - given its illegality.Thanks.

You can file a complaint and get your money back. It does not invalidate the lease entirely
