Legal Question in Administrative Law in New York

hyphenated name

I have a hyphenated last name. I would like to start using only my married name from now for everything. I was told I do not have to legally change anything because they are both my legal names. Is this true?

Re: hyphenated name

The issue is fraud. As long as you have no intent to defraud or otherwise harm anyone, you may call yourself whatever you choose with no legal consequences.

However, you might want to change the name for use in government documents.
