New York is an "at-will" employment state. Unless you have an employment contract providing otherwise, your employer can fire you for good reason, bad reason or no reason at all.

If you do have an employment agreement with your former employer, it is probably worth taking a look at it. The agreement may not have to be a formal written agreement. Otherwise, as the previous commentator stated, you can be terminated with or without cause, assuming, of course, the cause, if given, is not unlawful (manifesting employment discrimination, for example). Have an employment litigator review your case.
