Legal Question in Technology Law in New York

software licensing

I am a computer consultant and from time to time when the need arises for me to use certain types of software to resolve an issue for a client I use it. My question is, if I am using the freeware edition of company X's software are there any licensing issues if I am getting paid by the client? For example a client has a virus, I obtain a free version off the internet and run it on the client machine and remove whatever viruses they have on their machine. Since they are paying me are there licensing issues from the manufacturer of the free software? Thanks

Re: software licensing

The answer to this question is ever changing. Anyone who tells you otherwise is giving horrible advice. Each program that you use has a license agreement that should accompany the software, whether it appears when you are installing or is always available for use. Check the license agreement and see how it compares to your particular circumstances.

Such is the only way to determine whether you are violating the license given to you by the company.
