Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I have been summoned to court regarding a credit card debt. This debt is in the hands of a collection agency. The court hearing is a arbirtation. Can the plaintiff just send an attorney or does the defendant(the credit card complany) have to appear ?
