Being so young, you have a lot to lose if you wind up with a criminal record, including: Financial aid for college, admission to graduate school, access to government jobs, and perhaps even the ability to get a job at all.
If this was your first offense, a competent criminal attorney should be able to either obtain a dismissal of the charges against you or a reduction of the charge to a non-criminal violation that won't affect your future employment and educational opportunities.
As for the civil demand, you are under no legal obligation to pay that unless ordered by a judge.
If you would like to discuss this further, please have your parent or guardian contact my office via email.
Good luck!
You're likely charged with a misdemeanor and may face starting off life with a criminal record, after 16 years of age you will be charged in an adult criminal court as opposed to family court...
I would suggest spesking to your family and seeing if you're able to hire a good attorney, if so you may reach us at 212-405-2234
Retain a competent criminal defense attorney to protect your rights and your future. Do not pay the civil demand, that constitutes an admission. You may contact my office @7188340087 for a phone consultation.
You should not expect jail time, but it would be highly recommended to have an experienced lawyer with you defending you and preserving your rights in court. It would also greatly increase the chance of lowering the charges or possible dismissal. We have substantial experience handling these types of cases and reasonable fees, however, we would need some more information before making a complete and proper determination. You are welcome to contact us for a free consultation.
