Grand larceny

If a 15 year old steals a car that has the keys in the ignition is it any less of a crime than if the keys weren't there? Is there such a thing as ''joy riding''?

You should hire an attorney IMMEDIATELY it may be possible to have this case moved to family court which would be a huge benefit to your son, and the resulting potential punishments would be accordingly extremely diffrent...Overall, he may have quite a few various defenses, and may be able to protect against the top charge, as you were asking, however being that he is only 15 and the potential to possibly move this case to family court i would look to hire an attorney IMMEDIATELY.

The joyriding statute is known as Unauthorized use of a vehicle. It is a misdemeanor. The crime goes to intent not whether the keys were in the car. However leaving the keys in the car increase the chances he will be charged with the lessor crime.
