Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
Petty Larceny
I want to be a police officer but have just been charged with petty larceny. I took two shirts from a retail store and got caught. I need to appear in town court in January. Will this hurt my intentions of going to college to become a police officer? Can I write a letter to the court and explain how much I regret my actions and my intention of my future career and my concern if I am convicted?

Re: Petty Larceny
Writing the court I'd sbdolutrly useless, they do not care what your future intentions are. Nor will the DA's office be receptive to any communication from you as they are not permitted to have direct communication with defendants...
Generally, applications to the police department are only barred by convictions, and not arrests. If you're truly interested in this as your career I would suggest investikng in a good defense attorney to ensure that the result of this case does not ruin the chances of you becoming an officer.
