Sexual Discrimination at work
I have been employed by my current employer for 2 years as an Accountant. I had 3 years experience in the field before I started my employment, as well as a BS Accounting. I just completed my MBA - Accounting & Finance. A new employee (a male, I am female) was just hired in as an Accountant. He just graduated college in May with a BA in Finance. He has no work experience whatsoever. His starting salary is 12K more a year than mine. When I approached management on this issue I was told that it was none of my business. I was wondering if I possibly have a sexual discrimination case against my employer. Thanks!

While at first blush it would appear that you may have been a victim of sexual harrasment, to reach an informed decision one would need far more information, e.g. how many other accountants are employed there? What are the respective responsibilities? Who attended which schools of higher education? Where in their classes did they rank? Only a thorough analysis of the salient facts will enable one to reach a meaningful opinion.

If you can show a pattern that woman are routinely hired at lower salary, less responsibility or passed over for jobs with seniority or higher pay, you may have a claim, but the fact that in one situation someone junior makes $12K more than you, by itself does not constitute a viable claim for sex discrimination.
