Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Inheritance

A relative married in the seventies a woman who at the time had an 11-year old child from another marriage. The child kept here biological father's last name. My relative died 10 years ago and we want to know if his step daughter who is now an adult is entitled to any inheritance.

Re: Inheritance

Entitled, in NY probably not unless he adopted her.

If he left her anything in his will however, it is more than likely hers (if he was of sound mind when he signed the will.)

Re: Inheritance

To be entitled to inherit she must have been legally adopted by the deceased step father or be named as an heir in his will.
