Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Can you make broad discovery requests like demanding that your adversary give you complete lists of all of the witnesses and exhibits they intend to use at trial? I mean, if you don't know specifically what to ask for, how can you request it in discovery unless you use broad phrasing such as this?

Yes, this type of question is normally asked by attorneys.

The answer to your request will probably be, the party has not determine what witnesses or exhibits will be used at trial yet. Of course, the party will have to supplement the answer closer to trial.

So, in addition to that question, you may consider asking the opposing party to identify all persons who may have information about any claim or defense in the case.

For the documents, you can ask to identify and produce all documents that are relevant to any claim or defense in this case.

Of couse, there are several other questions that can capture documents and identify people. The above are merely examples.
