Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Could I sign a confidentiality agreement with my college counselor to restrict my father from obtaining info? I am 17 years old.

My father does not participate financially to the private school which I attend. He will not participate financially towards my college education. I have since ended all contact with him (since February 2010). My school feels it has a legal obligation to keep him informed about my school transcripts and college decisions and plans. I feel otherwise. My father is not the custodial parent--my mother is.

What are the legalities?

The answer to your question is complicated. If your parents separation agreement, judgment of divorce, or court order of custody states that they have joint legal custody (not physical custody) it will take a court order to stop him from getting your college information prior to your 18th birthday. After you are 18, he should be barred from getting your info without your permission under the federal privacy act.
