Legal Question in Family Law in New York

wealthy parents won't pay medical costs

My parents are healthcare professionals and very wealthy. They are refusing to pay for my mental healthcare. They are jerking my doctors around and calling bluffs to avoid looking like the sick, abusive parents they are. I don't mind severing ties with them. Can they be forced to pay my medical bills not covered by insurance? I am 21 and still under their insurance until the age of 24. insurance only covers 30 mental health visits per year and not in full. My professionals are both private pay. I have not lived at home in almost 3 years.

Re: wealthy parents won't pay medical costs

No. Your parents cannot be "forced" to pay your medical bills, uncovered by their health insurance plan, unless they have a legally enforcable (written) contract with you, to do so.

Please be advised that parents are not legally obligated to support or care for their progeny, in any way, after 21 years. And, your medical coverage, under their PLAN, is considered a gift, not their obligation, to their adult child.

If you are w/o or w/ limited income, are disabled, and need medical treatment, you should consider applying for Medicaid or government subsidized health care services, at your local public hospital.

Good luck,
