Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York
Former friend refuses to return important personal property
A close friend of mine is in posession of a couple guitars, a bass, a box of
odds & ends and my great-grandmother's diamond wedding ring. When I
moved from NYC to London, he offered to ship these things safely for me at
his expense. We didn't have a personal falling out, but his current girlfriend
has recently forbidden him to speak to me (and has threatened to leave him if
he does) and now he refuses to acknowledge my requests for my belongings.
I have even given him my boyfriend's phone number and my cousin's phone
number so he doesn't have to speak directly to me. I asked him several times
via email and phone to tell me how much he needs to at least send my great
grandmother's ring and I've had no response. I'm no longer even concerned
with the other belongings of mine he has. I'm just desperate to get that ring
back as it is an important family heirloom and I'd like to know if I can do
anything legally.

Re: Former friend refuses to return important personal property
The big issue here is that you must in some way show some, any, evidence or acknowledgement from him that he has the ring.
If you can do that, then it would be very easy to get a court order to require the return of the ring (and other objects).
My fee would be $500.00 for the entire matter.

You can have someone file an order to show cause on your behalf (or you can do it) but it would have to be filed in the state where your friend lives.
Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
