Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

I met a woman in deli parking lot that was holding a puppy. She told me that she had to get rid of the pup cause she was going through a divorce and where she was going she couldnt take pup with her. I told her I would take the pup and asked what she wanted for him. She said nothing. We exchanged numbers and told her if she wanted the dog back she could have it back. She reassured me that she couldnt take the dog back cause the apt she was going to doesnt allow dogs. I said okay, cause I would be taking the pup to the vet the same day. I went to vet and got pup vacinated as well as treated for worms & mites.

Please note the woman had no collar on the 3 month old pup, no vaccines, nor could tell me what kind of puppy food she fed him, other than carrots & brocolli. She even tried to give the deli-person the pup and asked the person where she could get rid of the dog.

Sometime that evening woman's daughter called me telling me that she wanted the pup back cause she was gonna suprise her mom and try to have her family help her keep it. The next day I received a call from the woman asking me for the pup back.

Since she gave away her pup, do I legally do I have to return the dog to her?
