Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

wedding called off

My son called off his wedding, with two months to go. They drifted apart as he was 3000 miles away. (airforce)The ex-fiance arranged everything from her home town becasue he was too far away. Now, her parents want him to pay for all the deposits that cant be returned, the airfair for her coming to vist, hotel stay, all the materials bought for the wedding, airfare for their return trip, everything) Is he responsible to pay for all of the debt that was incurred? He is only 19, and this is totalling a couple thousand dollars so far - but they keep adding up) He didnt cheat, just realized that she wasnt the one for him. where does the ring go too? Her mother has threatened to go to his commanding officer if he doesnt pay everything

Re: wedding called off

The ring is returned to the ex since it is a conditional gift. In other words, the gift is conditioned on the marriage. If there is no marriage, there is no gift.

In terms of the ex paying for all the debt, there is not enough information in the question for me to properly answer. However, if the expectation of all parties was that bride and groom would equally pay for the wedding - each should equally be responsible for the debt.

Maybe the ring should be sold to pay off the debt.

Mike.
