Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

Hi -I came to the USA as a tourist and changed my status to F1. I don't have a visa, so I would like to go home and get my F1 visa. The college gave me the I20 form already , and I have everything ready (financial documents, room and board). But, I have heard that is very risky to go home and ask for a visa because the fact that I changed my status here is something they don't see well. Why would you reccomend me? I really want to go home and see my family , but I also want to finish a degree here. I am going to start my second semester in the fall. I am from Mexico
