Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York
Wife illegal
Hi,
I am a permanent resident and eligible for citizenship. My wife, however is here illegally after overstaying her visitor's visa. Will my filing for naturalization have any adverse effect on my wife and her ability to continue to live here until I am able to sponsor her as a citizen? Thanks for your help.

Re: Wife illegal
There should not be any adverse affects with respect to your wife, but you should be sure to indicate that you are married when completing you naturalization application, as well as show that you are paying taxes as a married person (i.e., reporting that you are married on your tax returns for as long as you've been married).

Re: Wife illegal
After you naturalize and become a USA citizen, she might be able to adjust status (became a permanent resident).
