Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
Professional Staffing Company's
I sent my resume to a job posting on monster dot com and within a few hours I got a call from the recruiter who posted it. We were chatting on the phone for a few minutes and he was asking me the typical questions, such as why I left my previous employer. He then went on and asked me where I live and I told him that I don't give out that personal information. He then responded to that by saying that he cannot work with someone who he doesn't trust and wished me luck. Do you think he has the right to refuse to work with me because I refused to tell him where I live? Do you think there would be any kind of recourse here?
From my experience over the past few months in dealing with recruiters, I found that they require you to fill out personal information forms when you go and meet with them. The forms ask you for your address and a few of them ask for more personal information such as your social security number which I find to be ridiculous. Recruiters do not need to know that information and I feel that they do not need to know your address either.

You didn't state if you actually checked to see if the person was from a legitimate recruiting service. Unfortunately, with the bad economy comes scam artists who pose as recruiters to steal identities.
Therefore, it is recommended that you don't provide personal information such as social security numbers, addresses, and dates of birth.
