My landlord raised my rent a month into lease!

A month after I signed a lease the renting office raised my rent due to MCI renovations. The approval was granted back in March of 2007. I signed the lease in June 2007. I was never notified upon signing the lease that my rent would be raised and I never received a letter stating my rent would be increased either. I just received a rent stub with a balance. Is it legal for them to raise my rent even though the MCI renovation was approved months before my lease was signed?

They were required to notify you in your lease that MCI was applied for and give you docket number etc. this way you are on notice of possible increase.

If they didn't, it is not legal for them to receive an increase.

I once had a client who was going to be evicted for not paying "undisclosed" MCI before she moved in. They had to withdraw the case.

Read your lease thoroughly and if isn't there send them a letter. There are housing organizations that can offer you info/assistance also. Go on the web.
