Notice to Quit must be served like a summons.

Personal service is always best. You will need proof of service if they do not appear in court.

Personal service is best. However, with Landlord and Tenant matters a form of substitute service called nail and mail (attaching it to the door after three tries) is accepted. You must also send a copy of the affidavit of service to the court within a certain amount of time after nail and mail service is done.

I would suggest getting a reputable process server who is familiar with the RPAPL service rules. You should pay in down state NY anywhere from $60-$125 for a good process server.
