Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
my son and his wife with 2 twin babies age 3 and a half, and an 18 year old high school son, owed 7 months back rent,he lost his job and is unable to find work. The landlord took them to court and the judge ordered them to pay the landlord $5,000.00 for the back rent and wants them out by mid june while having to pay full rent till then, Furthermore the judge ruled the 18 year old son has to pay the landlord's legal fee. My question is why involve the 18 year old high school son,and why couldn't the judge just say you have 30-60 days to get out and it would have been finished. If they couldn't afford the rent then, nothing changed to be able to pay the back rent now.

The order for the 18 year old to pay attorney's fees needs to be appealed. It is odd the judge would order him to pay. However, a lawyer who handles appeal's on this matter would be able to sit down with the son and tell him his options.
