Research them on the internet. Telephone them directly, tell them about the facts of your case, and see how they respond. Ask if they've handled similar matters, and what outcomes they achieved. Try to find examples of their legal writing, to make sure they reason well. You may even want to ask for references. After all that, trust your gut.

I agree with Andrew Barovick. You need to take the time to research attorneys and talk with them. Also, when you meet with them don't sign a contract that day. Instead, take all of them home and try to understand the provisions. On this site, so many people question the provisions in the contacts after they have signed them. Also, talk with others who may have had similar claims. They may be a good source for an attorney or at least they can warn you of the problems they had with their attorneys.

You need to speak with several attorneys on the phone and pick a few to meet with. Ask them questions about what kind of cases they have handled in the past.

You need to meet with the attorney in person. Hiring a lawyer is like hiring any other professional. You want to make sure they are competent, honest, and will communicate with you.
