Re: claims funeral cost

Just send the executor an itemization of your costs/expenditures wih a copy of a receipt from the funeral home for services rendered. This in effect is a claim against the decedent's estate and must be paid out of estate assets.

No special forms or paperwork required.

The easiest way is to ask the executor, or the attorney for the executor, for reimbursement accompanied by the original bill marked "paid". You can speak to the clerk at the Surrogate's Court and obtain instructions to file a notice of an unpaid obligation. This assures payment before the estate assets can be distributed.

Re: claims funeral cost

I agree with the other authors, with one exception. If the decedent was on Medicaid, Medicaid only pays for a simple funeral (plain pine box, etc.). If anyone wants more, this becomes a private pay issue and if the Executor and estate beneficiaries do not agree to reimburse you (only wanting what Medicaid provides), you might not be reimbursed and litigation might be necessary. You can expect the costs to be contested.
