Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York
Family Camp No One Uses or Pays For.
WE have a ''Family Camp'' that is still in grandfathers name between our house and another lot we own. No on has any interest in it any more or takes care of it. It is basically falling apart. It's 15 feet away from our house and if the chimney falls, it will hit our cars or house. We have paid taxes and bills on it for 2 years. Before that my mother in law paid most of bills on it. My husband and I would like to obtain the property and tear it down. Zoning laws in our area would not allow to rebuild it (It's a non conforming lot). Is it true that if you pay taxes on it for 7 years it's yours? What do you suggest we do? P.S The deed is in our possession as well.

Adverse possession is 10 years in New York, not 20. There is more to it than just paying the taxes.

Can grandfather deed it to you?
You don't get title after a period of time unless you mark it off and function as the exclusive owner for 20 years. Merely paying taxes won't do it.
The deed is the best way to acquire ownership.
