my grandmother passed away 7 years ago she did not have a will, she had a small checking account with balance is their any way to access her account

The person entitled to the account can start a small estate proceeding in the Surrogate's court in the county in which your grandmother resided at the time of her death. A telephone call to the clerk should result in obtaining all the information you need.The preceding is quite simple and inexpensive.

I would suspect that after seven years with no activity, the account has been turned over to the NY Sate Comptroller's office. Go to their web site and enter your grandmother's name.
