Locating bank accounts in New York State
How does one locate all bank accounts of a deceased person in NY state? I have the SS# and Fed tax ID# of the trust but believe several bank books are missing. Is there some banking agency that could help me? Thank you.

I'm not aware of any such agency.
It takes time, but you can write to every bank in the area and with which he did business.
A private detective might be able to do the job for you.

Check prior tax returns for information. Also, if these were interest-bearing accounts, forms 1099 have/are being sent now indicating interest earned. These forms will give you bank name, account numbers, etc. Executor can contact post office to have mail forwarded. Executor can also get copies of prior returns from IRS, and can even have IRS provide current income information as reported to it. Last resort, send letters to all banks in area inquiring on possible accounts. Only authorized estate representative can get the information.
