Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Proving inheritance rights on property left intestate

Following my father's death, we recovered a letter addressed to my Grandfather dated 1942, in which it was stated that my family may be entitled to all or part of the estate of an emigree from Ireland who shared our surname. This man is likely related to my Grandfather and died intestate, leaving an estate totalling some $560,000.00 in 1942.

The letter asking us to make a claim was sent from an Irish law firm on behalf of Osbourne and McCoy of East 83rd street NY NY.

I have tried to trace this firm unsuccessfully. There are no records of any other correspondence relating to this matter and as such I consider it to be unresolved.

Is there a statute of limitations on such cases and if not, how would I go about making a claim?

Your responses will be much appreciated.

Check with the Public Administrator in the County in which the Emigree resided at the time of death.
