Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

dont trust the new guy

If my mother in law has an established retirement setup ( savings account-mutual funds-stocks-house in her name-annuity-etc.)

and a new man moves in, in the event that something should happen to her does he have any rights to pre-existing funds or house prior to him arriving as a live in. In the event they get married, does this change the turn out if there if no will has been set up. She has 2 daughters and 2 sisters.
