Legal Question in Immigration Law in North Carolina
Currently my girlfriend is on a student visa here in the United States. We are looking to get married around November of 2010. I was wondering though if I propose to her, is their a time limit in which we need to get married. I would like to propose in March of 2010.
In addition, I would like to hire an attorney to handle the procedure. What qualities should I be looking for in the attorney?

I would be glad to assit you with applying for your future wife's permanent residency (green card). This can be done only after you two are married.
I am an immigration lawyer and handle this kind of cases throughout the country.
As to proposing and actual marriage, there is no time limit on how long you can stay engaged. There could be a time limit as to how long a Marriage License is valid after you and your fiancee apply for a Marriage License. Usually, you can call your local courthouse and find out all the specific details: what documents they need you two to bring with you, how long a license is valid, etc.

Hire an attorney prior to the marriage. There are some great evidence opportunities at the ceremony itself. As a natural part of the process, you and your spouse will attend an interview where immigration services will question you and she about the bona fide nature of your marriage. After she passes you and your wife on that portion of the interview, the examiner will review your wife's admissibility to the U.S. Your attorney has the right to be present and you should strongly consider retaining an attorney who will follow through accordingly.
