Legal Question in Intellectual Property in North Carolina
Legal issues with using copyrighted songs in video productions
I am considering starting a business in video production - making things like wedding videos, etc. One of the things I would like to do is to put various songs behind the video tracks. I was wondering what legal implications this might have. These videos would never be broadcast, they would be for the sole personal use of the person who contracted the video.
Do I need to own a copy of the song? Does the customer need to own it? Can I not do it at all? Does it not matter since it's only personal use?

Re: Legal issues with using copyrighted songs in video productions
You should obtain licenses for the songs you plan to use. You can go through BMI, ASCAP, and SECSAC for how to license and rates.
Good luck with your new venture.
