Legal Question in Personal Injury in North Carolina

Is it possible for an injured person to personally call the insurance company {that covers homeowner's} of the individual(s) at fault? In other words, can the injured person make the FIRST contact with the insurance company to establish a claim and start the settlement process? I feel sure that I already know the answer to this question, but I need it answered by someone that can explain it better--to help me educate a family member.

Sure! But if you are asking a question like this, even a brand squeaky new adjuster fresh outta 'how to screw over claimants who represent themselves' school is very likely to get away with settling the case for a pittance if they settle at all. If you really wanna educate a family member who is crazy enough to consider doing something like that just ask them this - would you perform your own surgery on yourself? Hopefully they aren't so crazy that they answer other than no. Then ask - why not? The answer should be cuz I don't know how. You then say well guess what Mr. Wizard, ya don't know how to be a lawyer either so why ya even thinking about doing your own legal work ya butthead. You can feel free to use my cool 'Mr. Wizard' and butthead lines or you can leave them out if you feel the family member might get offended. Best of luck to you!
