Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in North Carolina

My mother died March 22, 2010. My oldest sister was power of attorney. I was told that upon the death of my mother that power of attorney was terminated at that time is that true? Also my sister had all of us (10 children) to meet at the house and read will to us. I was told that this was not the right procedure and that violated the will and rendered it null and void. Is that true?
