Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Ohio

Creditor calls about bill 16 years old

I received a phone call today from a creditor telling me I owe a department store $480 and the charges happened in 1989. I do not remember having this credit card. I have lived in my home for 6 years, prior to that I was at the same address for 9 years, I have a listed phone number. I have never been contacted in the past about this bill, it is not on my credit report, I pay my bills. How do I know if this is real? They offered me a deal to pay 50%. I have no idea if this is really mine, I don't keep records from 16 years ago, wouldn't I have heard something prior to this?

What are my legal rights? Do I need an attorney?

Thank you.

Send them a letter and ask that the debt be documented and verified. You have a defense to suit, as they are outside of the statute of limitations on the item.
